Process cooling supports a 40% reduction in production-related odors at Oleofat

Process cooling supports a 40% reduction in production-related odors at Oleofat
At Oleofat, process cooling became part of the solution to a specific environmental challenge linked to the production process.
Developed in two phases, the project involved the installation of two MTA TAE G chillers supporting a new oil separation system that, already during the first phase, helped achieve a 40% reduction in production-related odors.

Oleofat specializes in the valorization of oil by-products for the production of advanced biofuels and raw materials for the oleochemical market. Its activities include biodiesel, biojet fuels and specialty products.

The challenge: reducing the environmental impact of the production process
At its production plant in Spain, Oleofat launched a project to develop a new exchange system designed to reduce gases and odors generated during production. The initiative followed concerns about the impact of odors from the recycling process on the surrounding area, with the objective of identifying a technical solution capable of reducing this impact. Temperature control became an important part of the solution.

The MTA process cooling solution
The project was developed in two phases. The first, completed in March 2026, involved the installation of an MTA TAE G 602 process chiller with a cooling capacity of 115 kW. The second phase, recently completed, added a second unit, an MTA TAE G 802 with a cooling capacity of 150 kW.
The application presented demanding operating conditions:
- process water temperatures: 10°C / 5°C;
- ambient temperature: 35°C;
- cooling capacity: 115 kW in phase 1 and 150 kW in phase 2;
- corrosive industrial environment.
The cooling system enabled the operating temperature of the oil separation process to be reduced, contributing directly to the effectiveness of the new solution.

A measurable result: 40% odor reduction
Following the first phase of the project, with the installation of the new equipment and the upgrade of the oil extraction system, Oleofat recorded a 40% reduction in production-related odors. According to the project results, the improvement was mainly enabled by the lower operating temperature of the separation system.
Just six months after the first installation, the project has now completed its second phase with the addition of the TAE G 802.
The success of the project has opened the way for further development: Oleofat plans to implement the solution at additional facilities, including two other plants in Spain.

Process cooling as part of the process solution
From biogas applications to biofuel production, cooling requirements can go far beyond simply maintaining a set temperature. Understanding how temperature interacts with the production process makes it possible to design cooling solutions around the actual industrial challenge.
At Oleofat, that meant using process cooling to support a measurable improvement extending beyond the cooling system itself.
