How a Swiss semiconductor manufacturer upgraded its cooling infrastructure with R290 and free cooling.
In semiconductor manufacturing, process continuity is essential. Stable temperatures are critical to protect production quality, maintain cleanroom conditions and avoid costly downtime. When a European manufacturer of medical microelectronics decided to upgrade its process cooling system, the objective was clear: replace an ageing competitor chiller with a more reliable, efficient and future-ready solution, while keeping an existing MTA unit in operation after more than a decade of service.
A retrofit built around reliability
The project involved the replacement of a rooftop competitor chiller serving the air handling and dehumidification systems of cleanroom production areas.
Instead of replacing the entire cooling infrastructure, the existing MTA Galaxy unit, originally installed in 2014, remained in operation demonstrating the long-term durability of the installation. The new system complements the existing MTA equipment, creating a fully integrated process cooling solution.
High efficiency with low-GWP refrigerant and free cooling
The new installation combines an ARIES N R290 process chiller with an FC4ALL free cooling module, delivering 192 kW of cooling capacity under design conditions. The solution also includes dual pumps, an integrated buffer tank, EC fans and remote monitoring through a service agreement.
Thanks to the free cooling module, the system can significantly reduce annual energy consumption during favourable outdoor conditions. The project assessment estimates annual energy savings of almost 29%, equivalent to approximately 21,600 CHF and more than 4 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided each year.
Why MTA
Beyond the equipment itself, the project demonstrates MTA’s ability to deliver complete retrofit solutions for demanding industrial applications, combining natural refrigerants, free cooling, remote connectivity and long-term service support.
